Leonardo DiCaprio Reflects on Being ‘Starstruck’ Meeting Luke Perry on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Set
Leonardo DiCaprio admits even he gets starstruck. In the new documentary I Am Luke Perry, the Titanic star, 50, recalls his admiration for the late actor, whom he met while filming Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
“I was immediately struck by his kindness,” DiCaprio says in the documentary, which explores Perry’s rise to fame, career, and legacy. He describes Perry as “the manifestation of the new James Dean” and shares how they bonded over their experiences in Hollywood during the 1990s.
Perry, best known for Beverly Hills, 90210, played real-life actor Wayne Maunder in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. DiCaprio, portraying fictional Western star Rick Dalton, recalls their conversations about life, career, and Los Angeles.
“I felt an overwhelming sense of being starstruck,” DiCaprio shares, adding that Perry was “an incredibly generous human being.”
Perry passed away in March 2019 at age 52, just months before the film’s premiere. DiCaprio had previously honored him on social media, calling it an “honor” to have worked with him.
I Am Luke Perry is now streaming.
