In January 2021, we welcomed Harlow into our lives, having adopted him from the P.S.A shelter. His previous owner had left him in a closed room while on vacation, and he was found severely underweight, making him an unwanted companion for anyone.
Upon bringing Harlow home, it was evident that he was deeply apprehensive about staying indoors. To soothe his fears, I dedicated my time to being with him, offering reassuring words and comforting him. Nourishing him with food was also a priority to help him regain his lost weight.
In those initial days, Harlow gradually started to feel more at ease. He tentatively engaged in playtime with Jada outdoors, but the fear of being left alone lingered. I found myself talking to him constantly, and I even allowed him to sleep in my room for a few nights to ease his distress.
With his strong appetite and our unwavering care, Harlow managed to gain 2 kilograms within the first week. However, he remained significantly underweight, with a shortfall of up to 20 kilograms at his lowest point.
As time passed, Harlow’s confidence began to grow, and he became less prone to anxiety. He could now take walks without the shadow of fear, even conquering his dread of the dark. The garden became his playground, where he delighted in spirited runs and playful antics.
After three months of patience and love, I decided it was time for Harlow’s first trip to the beach. His sheer delight and enthusiasm during that outing warmed our hearts, illustrating just how far he had come in his journey of recovery.
Reflecting on Harlow’s miraculous transformation, it’s heartwarming to see him as the perfectly normal, healthy, and confident dog he is today. Although he occasionally indulges in mischievous antics during playtime, it’s a testament to his remarkable ability to overcome the painful memories of his past.
“He may have his quirks, and some of them I may not appreciate, but it’s a blessing to witness how he has managed to leave his troubled history behind and embrace the joy of a new life.”
