As the harrowing images and footage of civilians massacred in the streets of Bucha are met with disbelief and grief, charity UAnimals announced that more than 300 dogs have been found dead in an animal shelter in Borodyanka.
“A few days ago we were shocked by the terrible news – more than 300 dogs were killed in Borodyanka Animal Shelter,” UAnimals said in a statement. “They all died of hunger and thirst.”
I have no words. Russians even killed dozens of dogs in Kyiv region. WHY??
The dogs had remained locked inside their kennels until 1 April, as volunteers had been unable to return and feed them due to the ongoing war. Once they did make it to the shelter, they found only about 150 of over 480 dogs still alive. Many of those who survived are however in critical conditions.
“Several dogs did not make it to the clinic and died on the way, in the arms of volunteers,” UAnimals said. “The refugee was damaged in the war, but the animals were not killed by bombings – they died a terrible death without food and water, locked in their cages.
“They were left to die in agony.”

From the beginning of the war, millions of Ukrainian people have– and for volunteers who decided to stay, reaching shelters to keep the animals fed was increasingly challenging. At least three volunteers were killed while trying to deliver food;allowing volunteers to reach the shelters and take care of the animals fell on deaf ears.
