The late Queen Elizabeth was known for her ability to maintain the formal demeanor required by her role in public.
As a constitutional monarch, Queen Elizabeth was bound to be politically neutral and was skilled at keeping her private opinions and much of her personality hidden. While the British public was aware of her love for horse racing, riding, her pack of corgis, and her Christian faith, many of her passions and interests remained largely unknown.
However, during a 2016 documentary marking Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, Kate Middleton revealed more about what the Queen was like in her private family time. Despite the grandeur associated with her Royal role, Kate found the Queen to be far more down-to-earth.
“You would expect a lot of grandeur and a lot of fuss, but actually what really resonates with me is her love for the simple things,” Kate said.
The now-Princess of Wales also shared a charming story about her first Christmas with the late Queen, when she was unsure what to gift her grandmother-in-law – after all, what do you give the woman who has everything?
Kate Middleton once fretted over what to gift the Queen for Christmas, opting for a homemade touch. “She really cares and she is hugely thoughtful. I can remember being at Sandringham for the first time at Christmas and I was worried what to give the Queen as her Christmas present. I was thinking, ‘Gosh what do I give her? ‘” Kate recalled, reports the Mirror.
She decided on making chutney from her granny’s recipe, which thankfully ended up on the Royal table the next day. “And I think such a simple gesture went such a long way for me, and I’ve noticed since that she’s done that on lots of occasions, and I think it just shows her thoughtfulness really and her care in looking after everybody,” Kate shared about the Queen’s appreciation for heartfelt gifts.
