Kim Kardashian recently opened up about a surprising detail from her brief marriage to Kris Humphries on the latest episode of The Kardashians.
The SKIMS founder, who was married to the former NBA player for just 72 days in 2011, reflected on her past engagement rings while speaking with her sister, Khloé Kardashian. As she reminisced, she revealed that Humphries’ proposal ring—an 18-karat emerald cut from Lorraine Schwartz—was mostly funded by her, not him.
“I didn’t keep that,” Kim, 44, shared. “I was pregnant with [my daughter] North [West], still married to him, and in order to finalize the divorce, he said I had to give him the ring back.”
What made the demand even more frustrating, she added, was that Humphries had only contributed a fifth of the ring’s cost. “Jesus,” her friend and hairstylist, Chris Appleton, reacted, calling the situation “savage.”
Jeweler Lorraine Schwartz, who was present during the conversation, reassured Kim that it was for the best. “But I would’ve loved a collection,” Kim admitted.
The reality star—who later married Kanye West and had three more children with him—rarely discusses her short-lived marriage to Humphries. However, she recently joked about reconnecting with him after Khloé reunited with her ex-husband, Lamar Odom. “Should I call Kris Humphries?” Kim quipped to Khloé and their mom, Kris Jenner.
Looking back, Kim acknowledged that she felt pressured to go through with the 2011 wedding because it was being filmed for Keeping Up with the Kardashians. She later admitted she handled the breakup poorly and owed Humphries an apology.
“I was so nervous to break up with someone, I handled it totally the wrong way,” she said. “I fully broke up with him in the worst way, and I just didn’t know how to deal with it. I learned so much from it.”
New episodes of The Kardashians air Thursdays at 12 a.m. ET on Hulu.
