Red Sox Prospect’s Big Moment
On May 24, 2025, Worcester Red Sox manager Chad Tracy called Marcelo Mayer, the No. 4 pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, into his office at Polar Park. With Alex Bregman sidelined by a quad strain, rumors of Mayer’s call-up swirled. Tracy delivered the news: “It would be hard to start game 2 here if you’re going to be active in Fenway tonight.” At 22, Mayer was headed to the Boston Red Sox.
Teammates, including close friend Roman Anthony, mobbed Mayer with hugs. “To think that today’s the day, it’s pretty surreal,” Mayer told media in the parking lot. The WooSox clubhouse staff, led by Mario Oliveira, packed three equipment bags for his Fenway debut. “We needed to make sure that he got there and he had what he needed to get through that day,” Oliveira said.
A Frantic Send-Off
Mayer’s missing car keys delayed his departure, but clubhouse attendant Joey Cook lent his car, with Dylan Lawrynowicz driving Mayer to Boston. The content team, including Tayla Bolduc, captured the moment. “We were joined by a handful of media members and other WooSox employees,” Bolduc said, as cameras followed Mayer’s exit, fist-bumping mascot Clara on the way out.
Mayer and Anthony’s Bond
The next day, Polar Park’s jumbotron showed Mayer’s first MLB hit during the May 25 game against Durham. Anthony, watching with a wide smile, shares a deep bond with Mayer, forged through years in the Red Sox system. From Double-A Portland in 2023 to Triple-A Worcester in 2024, the duo’s late-night talks and batting cage sessions reflect their drive to improve. Fans hope Anthony joins Mayer in Boston soon.
